Slavery
During the early 1800's, slavery was very prominent in the southern U.S.. There were many slaves within households. They helped the women with work, like being a nanny to young children not old enough to go to school, or fetching water buckets from the local pump.
Slaves were not treated very kindly. Almost everyone was rude to a slave that they had. Many fights broke out between races and led to the Civil War, which brought them freedom.
Slaves did not go to school. They stayed home all day with the women. They were considered below most people in status. Some people believed them to be property.
The Sawyer family had a slave named Jim who did some chores for Aunt Polly. He chopped wood and got water from the pump for her. Tom tried to get him to whitewash the fence, but he does not.
Slavery was abolished in the late 1800's, so we no longer have slaves. Some people work for a living as maids and housekeepers, but they get time off and get paid.
