Work and Home Life
Back then, life was really difficult. The women, when cooking, had to use a cast iron stove, which were hard to use. That wasn' t all of it. To prepare food, they had to kill the animal (say a chicken) then pluck it and boil it. They couldn't just go to the supermarket and buy one. (For one simple reason: They didn't have one)
In addition to cooking, women had to clean the house. They had to beat out rugs, clean the glass of lanterns, change the firewood, wash the clothes, and many more things. All of this work was very tiresome, and housework was considered a full time job.
Children had chores, too. Some were simple, but others were hard, like mowing the lawn. In Tom Sawyer, Tom's Aunt Polly makes him whitewash the fence, a dreaded chore, for playing hooky, fighting with another boy, and running away for a short period of time.
Then the men had their jobs as lawyers, police officers, steamboat pilots, preachers, and other various positions. They did not have to work as hard as the women, but still had to work hard. They did, however, do a few chores around the house like chopping firewood.
Nowadays, we have dishwashers and laundry machines to do most of the work. Women have the option to have a job, and men can stay home if they'd like. Cooking is easier because we can go to the store and buy a plucked chicken ready to be put in the oven.
