Schooling
Tom's school was a one-room schoolhouse, with boys on one side and girls on the other. The youngest pupils were in the front and the oldest in the back. The teacher would go around the classroom and the age groups would recite their lesson or show the teacher. Meanwhile, the others would work on a lesson like spelling.
After morning lessons, the students would have "dinner" (lunch now) and recess. They would then resume classes in the afternoon and then go home.
Since school was a bore to Tom, he often played hooky, which was skipping school. He would play games and go swim while the other students were laboring away at their lessons.
Our schools now are quite different. There are many classrooms, often more than one for each age group, and boys and girls aren't sitting on opposite side of the room. Most schools still have recess and all have a lunch break.
