Religion
In a town like St. Petersburg in the 1800's, there was one church and everyone attended it on Sunday, wearing their best clothing, much like those who go to churches today.
Sundays were devoted to God, and nothing else. The villagers were in church quite a long time. They had Sunday School and a sermon by a pastor. Though on the weekdays, nobody thought much about God and just tried to lead good lives.
Tom hated church. He had to get all dressed up and sit through a boring ol' sermon.
In Tom's church, if you memorized a gargantuan amount of verses, you got a Bible. He traded many things for tickets and got enough for a Bible, though he didn't memorize his verses.
Today, in most communities, there are many churches and not everyone has to go. We still have sermons and some Sunday School. The main difference is that we have an option of where we want to go to church, if at all.
